COMPLETE SYSTEM RECIPE

SHIELD TV Pro (2019) → Vertex → Epson EH-TW9400 / 5050UB

With an LLDV EDID on the Vertex, the 2019 SHIELD sends Dolby Vision titles as low-latency Dolby Vision (LLDV), which the Epson shows in its HDR10 mode. Set the projector first, then the SHIELD, then check the result.

NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro (2019) and SHIELD TV (2019 'tube'). The 2015 and 2017 SHIELD models have no Dolby Vision and cannot be used for this recipe (HDR10 only). Epson EH-TW9400 / EH-TW9400W (Europe) and Home Cinema 5050UB / 5050UBe, Pro Cinema 6050UB (US). The Epson has no Dolby Vision decoder: it shows Dolby Vision as LLDV from the Vertex in its HDR10 mode.
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

Yes for Dolby Vision titles: the 2019 SHIELD sends LLDV when the Vertex presents an LLDV EDID, and the Epson shows it once it is in HDR10 mode.

Native Dolby Vision
NOThe Epson EH-TW9400 / 5050UB supports HDR10 and HLG only; it cannot show standard (TV-led) Dolby Vision.
LLDV via the Vertex
PARTLYHDfury lists 'Shield Pro' as an LLDV source for Dolby Vision content only; HDR10 and SDR are not converted. NVIDIA itself does not document LLDV.
HDR10
YESHDR10 works on all SHIELD models and on the Epson at 4K60 with EDID = Expanded.

Before you start

  • Check your model: only the 2019 SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro output Dolby Vision.
  • The Vertex needs an LLDV EDID in a custom slot for this input (see the Vertex page, part B).
  • Epson: use HDMI1 or HDMI2 and set EDID to Expanded, or 4K60 will not work.
  • Do not use 4K 120Hz or 8K modes on the SHIELD; the original Vertex handles up to 18 Gbps.
  • Only Dolby Vision titles become LLDV. HDR10 titles stay HDR10 and SDR stays SDR, so the projector must switch between modes.

1. Projector

Epson EH-TW9400 / 5050UB. Do this before touching the SHIELD.

  1. Connect the Vertex to HDMI1 or HDMI2Epson rear panel: HDMI1 or HDMI2Either portEpson: 4K HDR works on HDMI1 and HDMI2; both are HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2.
  2. Open the 4K60 input modeMenu → Signal → Advanced → EDIDExpandedNormal accepts only 3840x2160 at 30 Hz; Expanded accepts 3840x2160 at 60 Hz.Not available for the WirelessHD input on EH-TW9400W / 5050UBe
  3. Black levelMenu → Signal → Advanced → Video RangeAutoOther options are Limited (16-235) and Full (0-255); only force one if the whole chain disagrees.
  4. Colour spaceMenu → Signal → Color SpaceAuto (for normal use)Options: Auto, BT.709, BT.2020. Epson's 4K HDR FAQ asks for Color Space and Dynamic Range both on Auto.
  5. Keep image processing on FineMenu → Signal → Advanced → Image ProcessingFineEpson: Fast disables all image adjustments, including the HDR10 Setting you need to tune LLDV.
  6. Wide colour (optional)Menu → Image → Color ModeDigital CinemaEpson: the full DCI colour space is only shown in Digital Cinema mode (it uses the cinema filter and is less bright); pick another mode if you need more light.
  7. HDR switching – option A (recommended)Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → Dynamic RangeAutoAuto switches to HDR10 only when an HDR10 InfoFrame arrives. LLDV has none, so option A needs the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame.
  8. HDR switching – option B (no Vertex InfoFrame)Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → Dynamic Range, and Menu → Signal → Color SpaceHDR10 and BT.2020 while Dolby Vision plays; back to Auto and Auto afterwardsForces the PQ (HDR10) curve without an InfoFrame. SDR looks wrong in this state, so switch back after the film. With this source, HDR10 titles switch by themselves on Auto; only Dolby Vision titles need the forced setting.
  9. Tune HDR brightness lastMenu → Signal → Dynamic Range → HDR10 Setting1-16 (start at the default)Changes the PQ curve (picture brightness). Only adjust once Signal Status shows HDR10; there is no universal value.

2. Source

SHIELD TV Pro (2019). Do this after the Vertex presents the LLDV EDID.

  1. Pick the resolutionSettings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Resolution4K 60Hz (or 4K 59.940Hz / 50Hz)NVIDIA: keep a 60Hz mode for everyday use; other refresh rates make the home screen and 60Hz video feel slow.
  2. See all modes (only if needed)Settings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings → Custom display modeOnly if the mode you want is missing from ResolutionShows every mode the connected display, here the Vertex EDID, supports.SHIELD Experience 8.0 and later menu layout
  3. Turn on Dolby VisionSettings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Dolby VisionOnNVIDIA: Dolby Vision is not enabled by default. The switch only appears when the EDID advertises Dolby Vision.
  4. Or: a Dolby Vision Ready modeSettings → Device Preferences → Display & Sound → Advanced display settings → Custom display modeA mode labelled 'Dolby Vision Ready' (for example 4K 23.976Hz)NVIDIA uses these modes for Dolby Vision at lower refresh rates; the menu feels slower at 24Hz.
  5. Restart the SHIELDAfter the Vertex EDID changeRestartThe SHIELD has no LLDV menu; it follows the EDID it reads, so let it read the new one.
  6. Frame-rate matching (optional)During playback: Settings button → Match frame rate (beta)Use per video for 23.976/24/25p outputNVIDIA beta feature; it resets when playback stops. Apps such as Plex and Kodi switch on their own.

3. Check the result

Play a title that is really offered in Dolby Vision in the app.

  1. Is the projector in HDR10?Epson: Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → Signal StatusShould show HDR10 while Dolby Vision (LLDV) playsIf it shows SDR, the Epson did not get an HDR InfoFrame: use option A (Vertex InfoFrame) or option B (force HDR10 + BT.2020).
  2. Is the signal 4K HDR?Epson: Menu → Info → Projector Info → Color Format / Color Depth / Refresh RateColor Format should show 4K BT.2020 and HDREpson FAQ: this is what a compatible 4K HDR signal looks like.
  3. Then play an HDR10 titleEpson: Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → Signal StatusShows HDR10HDR10 titles carry their own InfoFrame, so the Epson switches on Dynamic Range = Auto.
THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

  1. Upload an LLDV EDID into a free custom slot and select it for the Vertex input of the source (part B). No Scaling.
  2. Make the projector switch to HDR: force HDR10 on the projector (step 1 above) or turn on Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2) — not both needed. Custom HDR stays on after power cycles; switch it off for SDR.
  3. Connect the SHIELD to a Vertex input and the Epson to a Vertex output; the SHIELD's input gets the LLDV EDID.
  4. The Epson can be forced into HDR10 by hand, so the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame is optional.
  5. Enable Custom HDR stays on over hotplugs and power cycles and flags SDR as HDR too. Because the SHIELD only sends Dolby Vision titles as LLDV, switch it off (for example with the IR command) when you watch SDR.
  6. The factory LG/Vizio Dolby Vision tables are for Dolby Vision TVs; this projector needs an uploaded LLDV EDID.

How you know it works

Problems and fixes

No 'Dolby Vision' switch in the SHIELD menu

Check the model: 2015/2017 SHIELDs have no Dolby Vision. On a 2019 model the EDID must advertise Dolby Vision: check the Vertex LLDV EDID and restart the SHIELD. NVIDIA also advises trying better HDMI cables.

A title plays in HDR10, not Dolby Vision

Check that the app really offers the title in Dolby Vision (NVIDIA: Netflix needs a plan with 4K/HDR).

The menu is sluggish

You are in a low-refresh 'Dolby Vision Ready' mode. NVIDIA says this is expected; switch back to a 60Hz mode.

SDR looks too bright or grey

The Vertex HDR InfoFrame or a forced Epson HDR10 setting is still on. Switch the InfoFrame off, or set Dynamic Range and Color Space back to Auto.

Dolby Vision plays but the picture is grey, washed out and dull

The Epson is still in SDR. Check Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → Signal Status. If it says SDR, enable the Vertex HDR InfoFrame (see the Vertex page, part B) or force Dynamic Range = HDR10 and Color Space = BT.2020.

No 4K60 picture

Set Menu → Signal → Advanced → EDID = Expanded (Normal supports only 4K 30 Hz) and use certified 18 Gbps cables.

Colours look wrong after changing HDR settings

Epson: set Dynamic Range to Auto for HDR images, or Color Space to BT.709 for SDR.

Dolby Vision is too dark or too bright

Adjust Menu → Signal → Dynamic Range → HDR10 Setting (1-16), but only after Signal Status shows HDR10.
