VERTEX GLOSSARY / COLOUR

BT.2020 / xvYCC

Wide colour gamut standards: what BT.2020 and xvYCC are and where the Vertex lets you set them.

SIMPLY PUT

BT.2020 is a colour standard with many more rich colours than normal HD video (BT.709).

Imagine a bigger paint box: deeper reds and greens become possible. 4K HDR films are made for this bigger box.

xvYCC is an older way to get extra colours. The Vertex can tell the source that these are supported.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Does the HDfury Vertex support BT.2020 and xvYCC colour?

YESYes. The Vertex passes BT.2020 and xvYCC, can force BT.2020/xvYCC support into the Automix EDID, can output BT2020 colour spaces with Custom Scaling, and can flag BT.2020 with a custom AVI InfoFrame.

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. Automix: tick [2020/xvYCC] (p.28); RS232 #set edidbt2020 on (p.50); IR vertex_edidbt2020on (p.60).
  2. Custom Use mode: pick an EDID table with BT2020 in its name (p.15).
  3. SCALER > Custom Scaling: choose a BT2020 colour space, for example 4:2:2 BT2020 (p.30).
  4. Advanced: send an AVI InfoFrame such as 'BT.2020 YCbCr 4:2:2 20:E8:64:5D:00' (p.34, p.113).
AUTOMIX FLAG[2020/xvYCC] (p.28)
RS232#set edidbt2020 on/off (p.50)
SCALERRGB/4:4:4/4:2:2/4:2:0 BT2020 (p.30)

What it is

BT.2020 (ITU-R Recommendation BT.2020) defines a much wider colour gamut than the BT.709 used for HD. UHD and HDR content is usually mastered for it.

xvYCC is an older extended-gamut colour space for video (IEC 61966-2-4). A display lists support for both in its EDID; the source flags what it actually sends in the AVI InfoFrame.

On the Vertex

In Automix mode the [2020/xvYCC] flag forces the EDID to present BT2020 and xvYCC support (p.28). RS232: #set edidbt2020 on/off; when not forced, it follows the sink (p.50). IR: vertex_edidbt2020on/off (p.60).

Many preloaded EDID tables include BT2020, for example '4K60-444 600MHz HDR BT2020 All Sound' (p.15). In Custom Scaling the colour space options include RGB BT2020, 4:4:4 BT2020, 4:2:2 BT2020 and 4:2:0 BT2020 (p.30).

With a custom AVI InfoFrame you can switch a TV into BT2020 mode when the content does not flag it (p.34). The Pro Tips list example AVI payloads for BT.2020 (p.113). The specifications list xvYCC Color Support (p.111).

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Does my TV show all BT.2020 colours?

Usually not. BT.2020 is the container; most TVs and projectors show only part of it, often close to DCI-P3. The signal is still labelled BT.2020.

The Vertex OLED says BT2020 but the content is SDR. Is that wrong?

Not necessarily. BT.2020 describes the colours, not HDR; a signal can be BT.2020 without HDR. The label comes from the AVI InfoFrame the source sends (p.34).

How do I make the Vertex report BT.2020 support?

Pick an EDID table with BT2020 in its name (p.15–16), or tick the [2020/xvYCC] flag in Automix (p.28).
