VERTEX GLOSSARY / DV WORKFLOW

Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision EDID/handshake workflows; Vertex can sniff the mandatory DV string from a compatible sink.

SIMPLY PUT

Dolby Vision is a type of HDR that can adjust the picture scene by scene.

It is like a lighting person who sets the lights for every scene, instead of once for the whole film.

It only works if every device in the chain says it supports Dolby Vision. The Vertex can read and remember that from your TV.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Does the HDfury Vertex support Dolby Vision?

YESYes, it passes Dolby Vision and stores the DV string of the TV on the BOT output, so DV keeps working with a non-DV AVR in between. It cannot convert DV to HDR10; for LLDV you upload an LLDV EDID into CUSTOM 4-10.

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. Connect the DV TV directly to the BOT output, boot the Vertex and check DV/IF > CAPTURED DOLBY VISION METADATA BLOCK (p.36, p.113).
  2. EDID: Copy BOT Sink, Automix with DV Force Metadata, or CUSTOM 2/3 with LG or Vizio DV (p.15, p.28-29).
  3. Set the SCALE slide to No Scaling: DV travels in an RGB 8-bit container (p.12, p.113).
  4. Leave the Automix DV Remove flag off (p.28).

01 / SIMPLE EXPLANATION

What is it?

How Dolby Vision capability is signalled.

A compatible sink advertises Dolby Vision capability through EDID data. Vertex can work with this handshake and sniff the required DV capability string.
02 / REAL-WORLD USE

Why would you use it?

Useful when diagnosing whether a source is actually being offered Dolby Vision capability.

In a Vertex system, this works together with the source, the connected sink(s), EDID/HDCP behaviour and the selected routing or processing configuration.
03 / HOW VERTEX USES IT

Inside the HDMI chain

Dolby Vision EDID/handshake workflows; Vertex can sniff the mandatory DV string from a compatible sink.

SOURCE → VERTEX → DISPLAY / AVR / PROJECTOR
04 / IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Do not confuse this with…

The complete source-to-display chain still needs to support the selected DV workflow.

This page explains the term in the context of the documented Vertex specification rather than as a general claim about every HDMI device.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Why does the Vertex show RGB 8-bit when I play Dolby Vision?

Standard (TV-led) Dolby Vision travels inside an RGB 8-bit container, so this is normal (p.113).

My AVR does not support Dolby Vision. Can I still get DV on the TV?

Yes. Connect the TV straight to the BOT output first, let the Vertex boot and store the DV string, then put the AVR back (p.36, p.113).

Can the Vertex convert Dolby Vision to HDR10?

No, it has no DV processor. What owners use is LLDV: an LLDV EDID uploaded into a custom slot, so the player does the DV processing (p.15, p.29).
