Epson EH-TW7300 / Home Cinema 5040UB + Vertex

The EH-TW7300 has no Dolby Vision and older menus than the TW9400. This guide shows its real settings and how LLDV from the Vertex can reach it as an HDR picture.

Epson EH-TW7300 (Europe, 2016) and PowerLite Home Cinema 5040UB / 5040UBe (US), which share the same menu structure. The same manual covers the EH-TW9300/TW9300W/TW8300/TW8300W. It has no EDID Normal/Expanded setting, no HDR10 Setting 1-16 and no Signal Status item; those belong to the later TW7400/TW9400.

DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex can only be shown as an HDR picture on HDMI1, and the reliable way to get the projector into HDR is the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.

Native Dolby Vision: NOThe projector has no Dolby Vision mode.
LLDV via the Vertex: PARTLYOnly HDMI1 has HDCP 2.2. LLDV carries no HDR10 InfoFrame, so with Dynamic Range = Auto the Vertex must add one. Whether a manual HDR Mode also works without it is not documented.
HDR10: YESHDR10 on HDMI1 (HDCP 2.2). Info → Color Format should read '4K BT.2020' and 'HDR'.

Before you start

Connect the Vertex to HDMI1: Epson says only HDMI1 supports HDCP 2.2, and its 4K HDR FAQ tells you to use HDMI1.
There is no EDID setting on this projector; ignore guides that mention EDID Expanded for the TW7300.
Make sure plain HDR10 already shows as HDR before you try LLDV.

2. Settings for LLDV from the Vertex

THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

LLDV: this display only switches to HDR when it receives an HDR10 flag, which LLDV does not carry. Turn on the Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2, route 2) and switch it off again for SDR.
Connect the Vertex output to the projector's HDMI1 (the only HDCP 2.2 input); if a Dolby Vision TV is also connected, the TV must use the Vertex BOTTOM output, so put the projector on TOP.
The Vertex HDR InfoFrame is the documented way to trigger HDR here; the projector's manual HDR Modes are not confirmed to work on a signal without HDR flag.
The Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' setting stays on until you switch it off, so SDR content is then also flagged as HDR (Vertex manual p.32, p.77).

Switch these off

Image menu → Epson Super WhiteEpson: HDMI Video Range is unavailable while Epson Super White is on.
Signal → Advanced → Image Processing = FastReduces processing; meant for games.

How you know it works

Menu → Info → Projector Info → Color Format shows '4K BT.2020' and 'HDR' while LLDV plays; Color Depth is shown there too.

Problems and fixes

No picture or no HDR in 4K.

Use HDMI1 (only HDCP 2.2 port), set Color Space and Dynamic Range to Auto, and check Info → Color Format.

LLDV looks grey and washed out.

The projector is in SDR. Enable the HDR InfoFrame on the Vertex.

NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER

Whether Dynamic Range = HDR Mode1-4 applies the PQ curve to a signal without HDR InfoFrame is not documented by Epson. Owners may try it, but it is not a confirmed LLDV method.
Epson's 5040UB 4K HDR compatibility table appears to list 4K HDR only at 24p (4:2:2 10/12-bit), which would fit 4K24 LLDV; the table uses icons and this reading is not confirmed.
How Video Range 'Normal' and 'Expanded' map to 16-235 and 0-255 is not stated in the text of the EH-TW7300 manual.
