Custom HDR Metadata – HDfury Vertex glossary

Build your own HDR10 static metadata on the Vertex and send it in place of, or on top of, the source metadata.

SIMPLY PUT

HDR video carries a small note that tells the screen how bright and how colourful the film was made.

The screen uses that note to decide how to show the picture. With custom HDR metadata you write your own note and the Vertex sends it instead.

It changes how the screen shows the picture, not the picture itself.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Can the HDfury Vertex inject custom HDR metadata?

YESYes. The HDR INFOFRAME tab builds your own HDR metadata (EOTF, primaries, luminance, MaxCLL, MaxFALL) and sends it instead of the source's. ENABLE CUSTOM HDR stays on after power cycles, so SDR is then flagged as HDR too.

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. USB GUI > HDR INFOFRAME: read CAPTURED HDR METADATA from the source (p.32).
  2. Fill in the generator fields, click Create IF, then Send HDR; this turns on ENABLE CUSTOM HDR (p.32-33).
  3. RS232: #set hdrstr ... and #set hdrcustom on/off (p.51); IR: vertex_hdrcustomon / vertex_hdrcustomoff (p.77-78).
  4. To stop, untick ENABLE CUSTOM HDR (p.33).
DEFAULTENABLE CUSTOM HDR off (p.32)
VALUE RANGE1–65535 per luminance field (p.33)
RS232#set hdrstr / #set hdrcustom (p.51)

What it is

HDR10 video carries static metadata in an HDR InfoFrame. It names the transfer function (EOTF), the colour primaries and white point of the mastering display, its maximum and minimum luminance, and the MaxCLL and MaxFALL light levels of the content.

The display uses this to decide how to map the picture to its own brightness. Changing the metadata changes how the display tone-maps, without touching the video itself.

On the Vertex

The HDR INFOFRAME page shows CAPTURED HDR METADATA from the source in readable form (p.32). The CUSTOM HDR METADATA GENERATOR lets you build your own and add it to the signal or replace the existing metadata (p.32).

Fields: EOTF (SDR Luminance Range, HDR Luminance Range, HLG ITU-R BT.2100-0 or SMPTE ST 2084), Primaries (DCI P3, ITU-R BT 709-5 or ITU-R BT2020-2), White Point, Max Luminance, Min Luminance, MaxCLL and MaxFALL, each 1 to 65535 (p.32–33). Create IF builds the string; Send HDR sends it and switches on ENABLE CUSTOM HDR (p.33).

ENABLE CUSTOM HDR is off by default. When on, it turns on the HDR mode of any HDR display and is stored over hotplugs and power cycles (p.32). Pressing Send HDR again only changes values, which avoids a TV resync (p.33). To reset the strings, hold RESET 10 seconds or reset on the GUI config page (p.33).

RS232: #set hdrstr and #set hdrcustom on/off (p.51).

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Why is my SDR content now shown in HDR mode?

ENABLE CUSTOM HDR stays on over hotplugs and power cycles, so the HDR note is sent with every signal. Turn it off when you do not need it (p.32).

Can this make my projector enter HDR mode for LLDV?

Yes. When ENABLE CUSTOM HDR is on, it turns on the HDR mode of any HDR display (p.32). HDfury describes this for LLDV on displays that can be put in HDR mode.

How do I reset the custom HDR values?

Hold RESET for 10 seconds or reset from the GUI CONFIG page (p.33).
