OPPO UDP-203 → Vertex → JVC DLA-X7000

The JVC X7000 cannot decode Dolby Vision, but the OPPO can send player-led (low-latency) Dolby Vision through the Vertex, and the JVC shows it with its HDR gamma 'D'. Set the projector first, then the OPPO, then check the result.

OPPO UDP-203 and UDP-205 with firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later (last official: UDP20X-65-0131). JVC DLA-X7000, and the DLA-X5000 / X9000 and US DLA-RS400 / RS500 / RS600 that share its menus (2016 generation). The X7000 has no HDR picture mode and no 'HDR(ST.2084)' gamma; those belong to the later X5900/X7900/X9900.
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

Yes: with Dolby Vision Processing set to Player-led and an LLDV EDID on the Vertex, the OPPO sends LLDV, and the JVC shows it in a User mode with Gamma D and BT.2020.

Native Dolby Vision
NOThe JVC X7000 has no Dolby Vision decoder, so standard (TV-led) Dolby Vision cannot be shown.
LLDV via the Vertex
YESOPPO added Player-led Dolby Vision in firmware UDP20X-60-0625. HDfury lists the OPPO 203/205 as an LLDV source for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and SDR content, and names JVC projectors with a custom gamma as suitable for LLDV with the original Vertex.
HDR10
YESHDR10 works on the OPPO and on the JVC, which switches to Gamma D when it detects an HDR signal.

Before you start

  • OPPO firmware must be UDP20X-60-0625 or later; older firmware has no Player-led option.
  • The Vertex needs an LLDV EDID in a custom slot for this input (see the Vertex page, part B).
  • The X7000 has no HDR picture mode. HDR on this generation means Picture Adjust → Gamma 'D' plus Color Profile 'BT.2020'.
  • LLDV carries no HDR flag, so the JVC will not switch to Gamma D by itself: set it by hand in a User mode.
  • Prove plain HDR10 first (OPPO HDR Setting = Auto), then switch to Dolby Vision.

1. Projector

JVC DLA-X7000 (manual B5A-1144). Do this before touching the OPPO.

  1. Input levelInput Signal → Input LevelAutoOptions: Auto, Standard (16-235), Enhanced, Super White.
  2. Colour spaceInput Signal → Color SpaceAutoDetects YCbCr (4:4:4), YCbCr (4:2:2) and RGB.
  3. EDID of HDMI 2Input Signal → HDMI2 EDIDAJVC: 'Set to A under normal conditions'; B is for older devices at 1080p or lower.Only when the Vertex is connected to HDMI 2
  4. Pick a User mode for Dolby VisionPicture Adjust → Picture ModeA User mode (User 1-6)Keeps the LLDV settings separate from your SDR modes. Do not use THX or x.v.Color modes: they fix the gamma, so 'D' cannot be selected.User 1-3 on the X5000
  5. HDR gammaPicture Adjust → GammaDJVC: 'Gamma suitable for viewing HDR content'. With HDR10 it may switch automatically; with LLDV you must set it by hand.
  6. HDR colourPicture Adjust → Color ProfileBT.2020Dolby Vision and HDR content use BT.2020. Depending on the image-quality data version it may be listed as 'Custom 1'.X7000 / X9000 (check the list on the X5000)
  7. Fine-tune brightness lastPicture Adjust → Gamma → Picture Tone / Dark Level / Bright LevelPicture Tone -16 to +16, start at 0JVC: if the image looks dark after selecting 'D', fine-tune it here.

2. Source

OPPO UDP-203 / UDP-205. Do this after the Vertex presents the LLDV EDID.

  1. Update the firmwareFirmware update via network, USB or disc (see the OPPO firmware page)UDP20X-60-0625 or later (last official UDP20X-65-0131)Player-led Dolby Vision and the 'Dolby Vision' HDR mode only exist from UDP20X-60-0625.
  2. Output resolutionSetup → Video Output Setup → Output ResolutionAutoOPPO: automatically sets the optimal output resolution.
  3. Colour spaceSetup → Video Output Setup → Color SpaceAutoOPPO: the player checks with the display to choose the colour space.
  4. Colour depthSetup → Video Output Setup → Color DepthAutoOPPO manual: HDR needs Auto or 10-bit colour depth.
  5. Baseline test: HDR10Setup → Video Output Setup → HDR SettingAutoOPPO: outputs HDR if both the content and the display support it. Check an HDR10 disc works before going on.
  6. Switch to player-led Dolby VisionSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR Setting → Dolby Vision ProcessingPlayer-ledOPPO: the player does the Dolby Vision processing instead of the display. OPPO does not document switching automatically, so set it by hand.
  7. Optional: everything as Dolby VisionSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR SettingDolby VisionOPPO: converts the output to Dolby Vision when possible, so HDR10 and SDR discs are also sent as LLDV and the JVC can stay in one User mode. Keep Auto if HDR10 discs should stay HDR10.

3. Check the result

Play a Dolby Vision disc.

  1. Is the JVC in its HDR gamma?JVC: Picture Adjust → Gamma and Color ProfileD and BT.2020 in the User mode you choseIf the picture is washed out, one of the two is not set.
  2. Is the OPPO sending player-led Dolby Vision?Vertex OLED Info page, INP lineNot RGB 8-bitRGB 8-bit means standard (TV-led) Dolby Vision, which the JVC cannot show: check Dolby Vision Processing = Player-led.
  3. Then play an HDR10 discJVC: Picture Adjust → GammaDWith OPPO HDR Setting = Auto, HDR10 discs arrive as HDR10 and the JVC may switch to D by itself; with HDR Setting = Dolby Vision they arrive as LLDV and use the same User mode.
THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

  1. Upload an LLDV EDID into a free custom slot and select it for the Vertex input of the source (part B). No Scaling.
  2. Make the projector switch to HDR: force HDR10 on the projector (step 1 above) or turn on Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2) — not both needed. Custom HDR stays on after power cycles; switch it off for SDR.
  3. Connect the OPPO's HDMI output to a Vertex input and the JVC to a Vertex output; the OPPO's input gets the LLDV EDID.
  4. HDfury: the original Vertex works for LLDV with a JVC projector that has a custom gamma. On the X7000 you set Gamma D by hand, so the Vertex HDR InfoFrame is optional.
  5. For the JVC custom-gamma method HDfury uses the Vertex 'Disable HDR' option, which removes all HDR metadata so the JVC gamma is applied.
  6. Enable Custom HDR stays on over power cycles and flags SDR as HDR too; if you use it, it fits best with OPPO HDR Setting = Dolby Vision (everything sent as LLDV).
VERTEX DOLBY VISION SETUP — ALL STEPS →

Switch these off

How you know it works

Problems and fixes

No 'Dolby Vision Processing' or 'Dolby Vision' choice under HDR Setting

The OPPO firmware is older than UDP20X-60-0625. Update the player.

Dolby Vision disc arrives as HDR10

Check Dolby Vision Processing = Player-led and the Vertex LLDV EDID, then re-handshake: power-cycle the OPPO or re-select the input.

Dolby Vision looks washed out

Gamma is not 'D' or Color Profile is not BT.2020. Set both by hand in a User mode.

Picture too dark after Gamma D

JVC: fine-tune with Picture Adjust → Gamma → Picture Tone / Dark Level / Bright Level.

HDR10 disc shows as Dolby Vision

HDR Setting is on 'Dolby Vision', which converts HDR10 and SDR. Set it to Auto if HDR10 should stay HDR10.

HDR does not engage at all

Set OPPO Color Depth and Color Space back to Auto.

4K60 HDR drops out

Use certified 18 Gbps cables. LLDV at 4K60 fits within the Vertex's 18 Gbps.
