Roku Ultra + Vertex

This guide shows which Roku Ultra models output Dolby Vision and which Roku settings to use for native Dolby Vision to a DV TV through the Vertex.

Dolby Vision (Roku developer hardware list): Roku Ultra 4800X (from 2020, sold as 4800/4801/4802 variants) and Roku Ultra 4850X (2024, also HDR10+). Older Roku Ultra models 4640X (2016), 4660X/4661X/4662X (2017) and 4670X (2019) are HDR10 only. All output at most 4K60.
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

Roku Ultra 4800 and 4850 send native Dolby Vision to a DV TV through the Vertex; LLDV from Roku is not documented by Roku or HDfury.

Native Dolby Vision
PARTLYYes on Roku Ultra 4800 and 4850; no on the older Ultra models (HDR10 only).
LLDV via the Vertex
NOT CONFIRMEDRoku does not document LLDV, and Roku is not on HDfury's list of LLDV sources.
HDR10
YESHDR10 on all 4K Roku Ultra models; HDR10+ on the 4850. Maximum 4K60.

Before you start

  • Check the model number: only the 4800 series and the 4850 have Dolby Vision.
  • Roku: for 4K HDR every device in the chain (TV, AVR, soundbar, and so the Vertex path too) must support HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, and you need a Premium High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Roku: many TVs ship with their HDMI inputs in a limited mode; enable the enhanced / UHD colour mode on the display input the Vertex feeds.
  • Set the Vertex EDID first, then restart the Roku (Settings → System → Power → System Restart) so it reads the new EDID.

  4. TV control (HDMI-CEC)Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC)1-Touch Play, TV power and TV volume as you preferCEC passes through the Vertex BOTTOM output only; turn off 1-Touch Play if inputs switch unexpectedly.

2. Dolby Vision on a Dolby Vision TV

Roku Ultra 4800 and 4850 only. The Vertex must pass the TV's Dolby Vision capability (see Vertex part A).

  2. Play a Dolby Vision titleA streaming app with Dolby Vision contentStart a title marked Dolby VisionThe Vertex should show RGB 8-bit while it plays; that is normal for Dolby Vision.
THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

  1. Dolby Vision TV: connect the TV to the Vertex BOTTOM output and follow part A — EDID "COPY BOT SINK" (or Automix with "DV Force Metadata"), No Scaling, InfoFrame tools off.
  2. LLDV: LLDV output from this device is not confirmed, so the LLDV route (part B) may not work. Test it before you rely on it.
  3. Connect the Roku Ultra to a Vertex input; the Dolby Vision TV goes on the Vertex BOTTOM output.
  4. LLDV from Roku is not confirmed; part B (LLDV to an HDR10 display) is untested with Roku.
  5. While standard Dolby Vision plays, the Vertex shows RGB 8-bit. That is normal (Vertex manual, Pro Tips).

How you know it works

Problems and fixes

Picture flashes black when playback starts or stops

Normal with Auto-adjust display refresh rate enabled (Roku).

No 4K HDR, or only 30fps

Enable the enhanced / UHD colour mode on the display input; every device in the chain needs HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 (Roku). Then try Display type 4K or 1080p to isolate the problem.

No Dolby Vision on a DV TV

Check the model (only 4800 and 4850 have Dolby Vision), then the Vertex EDID and any AVR in the chain, and restart the Roku.
