OPPO UDP-203 / UDP-205 + Vertex
This guide sets the OPPO up for Dolby Vision through the Vertex: TV-led for a Dolby Vision TV, or Player-led (LLDV) for an HDR10 projector or TV.
With firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later the OPPO sends TV-led Dolby Vision to a DV TV and Player-led (LLDV) Dolby Vision for an HDR10 display, and it can convert HDR10 and SDR to Dolby Vision too.
- Native Dolby Vision
- YESSet Dolby Vision Processing to TV-led. The TV does the Dolby Vision processing. Standard DV needs a Dolby Vision TV (OPPO release notes).
- LLDV via the Vertex
- YESSet Dolby Vision Processing to Player-led: the player does the DV processing. HDfury lists the OPPO 203/205 as LLDV-capable for Dolby Vision discs and, with HDR Setting 'Dolby Vision', also for HDR10 and SDR content.
- HDR10
- YESHDR Setting 'Auto' outputs HDR when the disc and the display support it. Color Depth must be Auto or 10-bit for HDR10 (OPPO manual).
Before you start
- Firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later is required for Player-led Dolby Vision and the 'Dolby Vision' HDR mode. Install the last official release, UDP20X-65-0131, as described on OPPO's firmware page.
- The OPPO manual v1.0 (Dec 2016) predates Dolby Vision. The Dolby Vision menu items are documented only in OPPO's firmware release notes.
- Play a normal HDR10 disc first with HDR Setting = Auto. When HDR10 works through the Vertex, move on to Dolby Vision.
1. Basic picture settings
All items are in the player's Setup menu.
- Output resolutionSetup → Video Output Setup → Output ResolutionAutoThe player picks the best resolution the display (via the Vertex) accepts.
- Color spaceSetup → Video Output Setup → Color SpaceAutoThe player asks the display which color space to use. Other options: RGB Video Level, RGB PC Level, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, YCbCr 4:2:0.
- Color depthSetup → Video Output Setup → Color DepthAutoOPPO: HDR10 output only works with Auto or 10-bit. 8-bit blocks HDR.
- HDR baselineSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR SettingAutoOutputs HDR when both the disc and the display support it. Use this to prove HDR10 first.
2. Dolby Vision on a Dolby Vision TV
- HDR SettingSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR SettingAutoOnly Dolby Vision discs are sent as Dolby Vision; HDR10 discs stay HDR10.
- TV-led processingSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR Setting → Dolby Vision ProcessingTV-ledStandard Dolby Vision: the TV does the processing.Firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later. Older firmware has no choice and is always TV-led.
3. Dolby Vision (LLDV) on an HDR10 projector or TV
- Player-led processingSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR Setting → Dolby Vision ProcessingPlayer-ledThe player does the Dolby Vision processing and sends low-latency DV, which the Vertex LLDV EDID asks for. Set this by hand.Firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later
- Optional: send everything as Dolby VisionSetup → Video Output Setup → HDR SettingDolby VisionOPPO: converts the output to Dolby Vision when possible, so HDR10 and SDR discs are also sent as (LL)DV. Keep Auto if HDR10 discs must stay HDR10.Firmware UDP20X-60-0625 or later
Vertex settings for this setup
- Dolby Vision TV: connect the TV to the Vertex BOTTOM output and follow part A — EDID "COPY BOT SINK" (or Automix with "DV Force Metadata"), No Scaling, InfoFrame tools off.
- HDR10 projector or TV (LLDV): follow part B — upload an LLDV EDID into a free custom slot (CUSTOM 4–10) and select it for the Vertex input this player is connected to. Then make the display switch to HDR (part B2).
- Connect the OPPO HDMI output to the Vertex input; a Dolby Vision TV goes on the Vertex BOTTOM output.
- With the original Vertex, LLDV only works on a display that can be forced into HDR (PQ) mode by hand or uses a custom gamma curve (JVC), because LLDV is not flagged as HDR10 (HDfury).
- For LLDV the Vertex must present an LLDV EDID uploaded to a custom slot; the OPPO only sends Player-led DV when that EDID advertises Dolby Vision.
- Firmware UDP20X-65-0131 added an 'HDMI IN BYPASS' mode for Dolby Vision passthrough from a source connected to the OPPO's HDMI input. OPPO does not give its menu location.
Switch these off
- Setup → Video Output Setup → HDR Setting = OffOff always outputs video without HDR, so no HDR10 or Dolby Vision reaches the Vertex.
- Setup → Video Output Setup → Color Depth = 8-bitHDR10 needs Auto or 10-bit (OPPO manual).
- Dolby Vision Processing = Player-led when you feed a Dolby Vision TVUse TV-led for a DV TV. Player-led is meant for the LLDV path on an HDR10 display.
How you know it works
- On the Vertex OLED Info page, the INP line shows the incoming signal. For TV-led Dolby Vision, RGB 8-bit is normal (Vertex manual p.113).
- HDR10 test: with HDR Setting = Auto and an HDR10 disc, the Vertex OLED Info page INP line shows the HDR flag and BT2020.
- If an HDR10 disc arrives as Dolby Vision, HDR Setting is on 'Dolby Vision' (conversion is active).
Problems and fixes
There is no 'Dolby Vision Processing' or 'Dolby Vision' option under HDR Setting.
The firmware is older than UDP20X-60-0625. Update the player (last official: UDP20X-65-0131).
An HDR10 disc shows up as Dolby Vision.
HDR Setting is set to 'Dolby Vision', which converts HDR10 and SDR. Set HDR Setting to Auto to keep HDR10 as HDR10.
A Dolby Vision disc arrives as HDR10 in an LLDV setup.
Check that Dolby Vision Processing is Player-led and that the Vertex EDID advertises Dolby Vision. Then power-cycle the OPPO or re-select the input to force a new handshake.
HDR10 does not switch on at all.
Set Color Depth back to Auto (HDR10 needs Auto or 10-bit) and Color Space to Auto.
Colors look wrong (magenta/green or washed out).
A first thing to try: set Color Space and Color Depth back to Auto and check that plain HDR10 works. OPPO does not document a specific fix for this.
- Whether the OPPO switches to Player-led by itself when the EDID only advertises low-latency Dolby Vision. OPPO does not document this, so set Player-led manually.
- An HDR Setting option called 'Strip Metadata'. It is described only in community sources, not in OPPO's manual or release notes.
- The exact menu path for the firmware update and for 'HDMI IN BYPASS'. OPPO's release notes name the features but not the menu location.
- Owners report (AVForums) using HDR Setting = Dolby Vision plus Player-led to get Dolby Vision-style tone mapping of HDR10 discs on projectors. This is a community setup, not an OPPO instruction.
