VERTEX GLOSSARY / METADATA

AVI InfoFrame – HDfury Vertex glossary

The packet that tells a display the colour format and colorimetry of the video, and how the Vertex can replace it.

SIMPLY PUT

The AVI InfoFrame is a small label that travels with the picture and tells the screen how to read the colours.

It is like the label on a paint tin that says which colour mix is inside: with the wrong label, the painter uses the wrong mix.

The Vertex can show this label and, for experts, replace it with your own.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Can the HDfury Vertex read and change the AVI InfoFrame?

YESYes. The Vertex shows the captured AVI InfoFrame and can replace it with your own HEX string, or block it. This is for advanced users: a wrong value can blank the screen and stays saved after a power cycle.

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. USB GUI > AVI/VSI IF: read CAPTURED AVI INFOFRAME (p.34).
  2. Type a CUSTOM AVI INFOFRAME in HEX and click Send AVI; this turns on Enable Custom AVI (p.34).
  3. RS232: #set avistr ... and #set avicustom on/off (p.51); IR: vertex_avicustomon / vertex_avicustomoff (p.56).
  4. To undo, untick Enable Custom AVI, or reset the strings by holding RESET 10 seconds (p.34-35).

What it is

The AVI (Auxiliary Video Information) InfoFrame is a small data packet the source sends with the video. It tells the display things like RGB or YCbCr, the colorimetry (for example BT.709 or BT.2020), the aspect ratio and the video format.

If the AVI InfoFrame is wrong or missing, the display can show wrong colours or treat the signal differently from what the content needs.

On the Vertex

The AVI/VSI IF page shows the CAPTURED AVI INFOFRAME from the source (p.34). In CUSTOM AVI INFOFRAME you enter your own AVI in HEX. Send AVI replaces the incoming AVI and switches on Enable Custom AVI; the string is stored and survives hotplugs and power cycles (p.34). An example use: activate BT2020 mode in the TV when the content does not send the correct InfoFrame (p.34).

The manual warns this is for advanced users: incorrect values can blank the screen, and because the setting is saved, a power cycle will not help until you reset (p.34–35). Disable AVI blocks the source AVI from reaching the sink, which can help some DVI displays and monitors (p.34); the RS232 list warns most TVs will then show no signal (p.51).

RS232: #set avistr, #set avicustom, #set avidisable (p.51). Pro Tips list example payloads, such as BT.2020 RGB 00:E8:64:5D:00 (p.113).

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Why did my screen go black after I changed the AVI InfoFrame?

A wrong custom AVI can blank the screen, and it stays saved after a power cycle. Untick Enable Custom AVI or Disable AVI, or do a factory reset (p.34–35).

When is a custom AVI InfoFrame useful?

For example to make a TV switch to BT.2020 mode when the content does not flag it correctly (p.34). The Pro Tips list example strings (p.113).
