VERTEX GLOSSARY / HDR

HDR10+ – HDfury Vertex glossary

HDR10+ adds scene-by-scene brightness data on top of HDR10, so a TV can adjust each scene.

SIMPLY PUT

HDR10+ is HDR10 with extra notes for every scene. Plain HDR10 gives the TV one note for the whole film.

It is like a tour guide who tells you what is coming at every stop, instead of one leaflet at the start.

If the TV does not understand HDR10+, it simply plays the normal HDR10 version.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Does the HDfury Vertex support HDR10+?

YESYes. HDfury lists HDR10+ support, and HDR10+ fits within 18 Gbps like HDR10. Your player and display must support HDR10+ as well (p.110).

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. In Automix mode tick the [HDR 10+] flag so the EDID advertises HDR10+ (p.28).
  2. RS232 #set edidhdr10 on or IR vertex_edidhdr10on sets the same flag; RS232 calls it HDR10 (p.50, p.76).
  3. Leave Disable VSI and Enable Custom VSI off, because HDR10+ scene data rides in a vendor-specific InfoFrame (p.35).
  4. Check what arrives in the AVI/VSI IF tab under CAPTURED VENDOR SPECIFIC INFOFRAME (p.35).

What it is

HDR10+ was introduced in 2017 by Samsung, 20th Century Fox and Panasonic and is royalty-free. It is built on HDR10: same PQ curve, same colours, but with dynamic metadata (SMPTE ST 2094-40) that can change per scene or per frame.

The extra data helps a TV that is less bright than the studio monitor: in a dark scene it can use more of its brightness for detail, in a bright scene it can protect the highlights. Over HDMI the scene data travels in a vendor-specific InfoFrame next to the normal HDR10 data.

HDR10+ does not need HDMI 2.1. It works over HDMI 2.0 as long as the player, anything in between and the TV support it. Dolby Vision is the competing dynamic format.

On the Vertex

HDfury lists HDR10+ support for the Vertex (p.110). HDR10+ fits inside the Vertex's 18Gbps bandwidth like normal HDR10.

The player only sends HDR10+ when the EDID says the display supports it. In Automix mode the [HDR 10+] flag forces the Automix EDID to present HDR10+ support (p.28). The manual is not consistent here: the RS232 command for the same flag, '#set edidhdr10', is described as forcing HDR10 (p.50).

Because the HDR10+ scene data rides in a vendor-specific InfoFrame, avoid Disable VSI and Custom VSI in the AVI/VSI IF tab while watching HDR10+; those options block or replace the incoming VSI (p.35).

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for HDR10+?

No. HDR10+ works over HDMI 2.0, if every device in the chain supports it.

What happens on a TV without HDR10+?

It plays the HDR10 base layer and ignores the scene data.

Does the Vertex support HDR10+?

Yes, HDfury lists HDR10+ support (p.110), and Automix has an [HDR 10+] EDID flag (p.28).

Is HDR10+ the same as Dolby Vision?

Both add scene-by-scene data, but they are different formats from different companies. A TV can support one, both or neither.
