HDfury Vertex
VERTEX GLOSSARY / VIDEO

3D video

3D video sends a separate picture for each eye. The Vertex can pass 3D, and Automix has a flag to remove it.

SIMPLY PUT

3D video gives each eye its own slightly different picture, so the image seems to have depth.

Hold a finger in front of your face and close one eye, then the other: the finger jumps. Your brain uses that difference to see depth, and 3D video copies this trick with special glasses.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

Does the HDfury Vertex pass 3D video?

YESYes. The specifications call the Vertex 3D Ready: it can pass 3D stereoscopic formats. The manual does not describe scaling or converting 3D, so use No Scaling and an EDID that lists 3D.

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. Set the SCALE slide switch to No Scaling/Passthru (p.12).
  2. Give the source the EDID of your 3D display: EDID MANAGER > Copy BOT Sink or Copy TOP Sink (p.29).
  3. In Automix mode, make sure the 'no 3D' flag is off (p.28); RS232 #set edid3dremove off (p.51).
  4. IR: vertex_edid3dremoveoff (p.58).

BLU-RAY 3D1080p24 frame packing

What it is

A 3D signal carries two pictures, one for the left eye and one for the right. HDMI 1.4 and 1.4a define how to pack them. Frame packing puts both full pictures on top of each other in one big frame; it is used by 3D Blu-ray at 1080p24. Side-by-side and top-and-bottom squeeze both pictures into one normal frame, which is common for TV broadcasts.

The display must tell the player in its EDID that it accepts 3D. If a box in between (a splitter or an AVR) hides that, the player will not send 3D and plays the film in 2D. 3D Blu-ray is a Full HD format; the Ultra HD Blu-ray standard has no 3D.

On the Vertex

The Vertex specifications say '3D Ready: capability to pass 3D stereoscopic signal formats' (p.111). The manual does not describe converting 3D or scaling 3D, so the safe setup is No Scaling (passthrough) (p.12).

Automix has a 'no 3D' flag that makes the created EDID report no 3D support (p.28). The RS232 command is '#set edid3dremove' (p.51). If your player no longer offers 3D through the Vertex, check that this flag is off and that the EDID in use comes from, or includes, your 3D display, for example by copying the EDID of the 3D display (Copy BOT Sink, p.29).

Common questions

Does the Vertex pass 3D Blu-ray?

The specifications say it can pass 3D stereoscopic formats (p.111). Use No Scaling and an EDID that lists 3D.

My player plays 3D discs in 2D since I added a splitter or AVR. Why?

The player only sends 3D when the EDID it reads says 3D is supported. Make sure the Automix 'no 3D' flag is off and the EDID comes from your 3D display (p.28).

Is there 4K 3D?

Not on disc: 3D Blu-ray is 1080p, and Ultra HD Blu-ray has no 3D format.
