Samsung TV + Vertex

Samsung TVs do not accept Dolby Vision. With the Vertex you can still watch Dolby Vision titles as LLDV: the player does the Dolby Vision processing and the Vertex tells the TV to switch to HDR.

Samsung 4K HDR TVs 2016–2025 (e.g. 2016 KS, 2017 MU/Q7, 2018 NU/Q, 2019 RU/Q, 2020 TU/Q, 2021 AU/QN, 2022 Q/S95B, 2023+ Neo QLED and OLED S90/S95). None of them shows Dolby Vision as Dolby Vision; the TV shows LLDV as HDR.

DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

No native Dolby Vision on Samsung; Dolby Vision titles work only as LLDV from the Vertex, with Input Signal Plus on and the Vertex HDR InfoFrame enabled.

Native Dolby Vision: NOSamsung lists HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG for its TVs and never Dolby Vision. Samsung does not publish a 'no Dolby Vision' statement; this is by absence.
LLDV via the Vertex: PARTLYPossible through the Vertex. The Vertex presents an LLDV EDID so the player sends LLDV (at 4K60: YCbCr 4:2:2 12-bit). An LLDV signal carries no HDR10 InfoFrame and the Samsung has no manual 'force HDR' setting, so the Vertex must add one. The TV then shows the picture as HDR, not as Dolby Vision.
HDR10: YESYes, automatically, including HDR10+ — but only when Input Signal Plus (older: HDMI UHD Color) is On for that port. Samsung: with it off, HDR signals from an external device cannot be received.

Before you start

Know which HDMI number on the TV the Vertex output is plugged into. Input Signal Plus is set per port.
The screen may flicker briefly when you switch Input Signal Plus on; Samsung says this is normal.
There is no Dolby Vision setting on the Samsung. Everything for LLDV happens in the player and the Vertex.

1. Open the full HDMI signal on the Vertex port

The name and place of this setting changed over the years. Pick the row for your model year.

2. Settings for LLDV from the Vertex

THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

LLDV: this display only switches to HDR when it receives an HDR10 flag, which LLDV does not carry. Turn on the Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2, route 2) and switch it off again for SDR.
Connect the Samsung TV to a Vertex output; the Vertex presents an LLDV EDID to the player and adds the HDR10 InfoFrame for the TV.
Use an LLDV EDID uploaded to a custom slot; never a normal TV-led Dolby Vision EDID (TV-led DV on a non-DV TV gives a pink/green picture).
Enable Custom HDR stays on until you untick it; SDR content then also looks like HDR.
HDMI 2.1 extras (4K120, VRR, ALLM) cannot pass the original Vertex.

Switch these off

HDMI Black Level: leave on AutoIt only acts on RGB input; changing it cannot fix LLDV colour issues.
Game Mode / Auto Game Mode on the film input (optional)Not needed for LLDV; VRR and 4K120 cannot pass the original Vertex anyway.

How you know it works

Play Dolby Vision content through the Vertex: the TV must switch to HDR. If it stays in SDR, the HDR InfoFrame from the Vertex is missing.

Problems and fixes

4K works but HDR does not

Turn Input Signal Plus (or HDMI UHD Color) On for the exact HDMI port. Then check the Vertex EDID and the source's HDR setting.

A Dolby Vision title plays but the Samsung shows SDR or a dim, flat picture

The TV did not get an HDR10 InfoFrame. Enable the custom HDR InfoFrame on the Vertex (Vertex settings, part B).

Input Signal Plus is greyed out

Samsung: it may be unavailable for devices that only send UHD 24/30 Hz or Full HD. Make sure the source sends 4K50/60 through the Vertex.

Screen flickers when turning Input Signal Plus on

Normal according to Samsung; the TV resyncs.

NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER

The on-screen text or badge a Samsung TV shows when it is in HDR mode (wording differs per model and was not checked).
Whether HDR10+ passes the original Vertex; the Vertex manual Rev 1.30 does not mention HDR10+.
