Optoma UHD projectors + Vertex

Optoma 4K projectors only switch to HDR when they detect HDR in the signal. This guide shows the per-model port and EDID settings and why LLDV needs the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.

Optoma UHD60 / UHD65 (2017), UHD50 / UHD51 (2018), CinemaX P1, UHZ65UST and the UHZ45 / UHZ66 family (2022 and later). Menus differ per model; each step says which models it applies to.

DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP

No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex only works when the Vertex adds an HDR10 InfoFrame, because Optoma's HDR setting is only Auto (detect) or Off.

Native Dolby Vision: NONone of these models has a Dolby Vision mode.
LLDV via the Vertex: YESOnly with the Vertex HDR InfoFrame. Optoma: HDR mode is enabled automatically when HDR content is sent; with Off the projector does not decode HDR. There is no manual 'force PQ' option.
HDR10: YESHDR10 on all listed models. On the UHD60 / UHD65 only HDMI 2 (HDCP 2.2) supports 4K 60 Hz; the UHZ45 family lists HDMI 1-3 as HDMI 2.0 2160p 60 Hz.

Before you start

UHD60 / UHD65: connect the Vertex to HDMI 2. Optoma: only HDMI 2 (HDCP 2.2) supports 4K at 60 Hz.
UHD50: there is no EDID setting (HDMI Settings only has HDMI 1 EQ and HDMI 2 EQ).
Make sure plain HDR10 already switches the projector to HDR before you try LLDV.

1. Port, EDID and HDR detection

2. Settings for LLDV from the Vertex

First enable the HDR InfoFrame on the Vertex; Optoma's HDR options stay greyed out until HDR content is detected.

THE VERTEX PART

Vertex settings for this setup

LLDV: this display only switches to HDR when it receives an HDR10 flag, which LLDV does not carry. Turn on the Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2, route 2) and switch it off again for SDR.
Connect a Vertex output to the projector (UHD60 / UHD65: HDMI 2); if a Dolby Vision TV is also connected, the TV must use the Vertex BOTTOM output, so put the projector on TOP.
The Vertex HDR InfoFrame is required: Optoma has no manual HDR override.
The Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' setting stays on until you switch it off, so SDR content is then also flagged as HDR (Vertex manual p.32, p.77).
Keep the Vertex scaler in passthrough (No Scaling) for LLDV; the projector does the 4K processing.

Switch these off

Dynamic Range → HDR = SDR→HDR (UHD60 / UHD65) or HDR SIM. (UHD50)These add a simulated HDR effect to SDR; they do not decode PQ and are wrong for LLDV.

How you know it works

Info menu → Display Mode shows HDR while LLDV plays (UHD60 and UHZ45 family; there is no separate HDR-type field).

Problems and fixes

LLDV looks washed out and HDR options are greyed out.

No HDR InfoFrame arrived: enable it on the Vertex. Optoma's HDR options stay greyed until HDR content is detected.

No 4K 60 Hz on a UHD60 / UHD65.

Use HDMI 2 and set Setup → Options → HDMI 2 Setting = EDID 2.

NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER

Guides that say 'HDMI 1/2 support HDR/HLG when EDID 2.0 is selected' for all Optoma models are not backed by the manuals checked; the EDID setting and its name differ per model and the UHD50 has none.
