JVC X5000 / X7000 / X9000 + Vertex
This 2016 JVC generation has no HDR picture mode and no ST.2084 gamma. HDR uses Gamma D with Color Profile BT.2020. This guide shows how to use that for LLDV from the Vertex.
No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex works with Gamma D and BT.2020 set by hand in a User mode, or with the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.
- Native Dolby Vision
- NOThe projector does not accept a Dolby Vision signal. It supports HDR10; the manual does not list HLG.
- LLDV via the Vertex
- YESJVC: if an HDR signal is detected, Gamma may switch to D automatically. LLDV has no HDR InfoFrame, so select Gamma D and BT.2020 yourself, or let the Vertex add an HDR InfoFrame.
- HDR10
- YESHDR10 via Gamma D ('gamma suitable for viewing HDR content') and Color Profile BT.2020. JVC specifies two HDMI inputs with HDCP 2.2 and 4K input up to 4K60P 4:4:4.
Before you start
- There is no 'HDR' picture mode and no 'HDR(ST.2084)' gamma on this generation. Instructions that mention them are for the X5900/X7900/X9900 or the Z1.
- You need a player that outputs LLDV and an LLDV EDID on the Vertex. The Vertex passes up to 18Gbps (4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit). HDMI 2.1 modes (4K120 10-bit HDR, VRR, ALLM) do not pass.
- Firmware for this family is on JVC's download page for X9000/X7000/X5000/RS600/RS500/RS400.
1. Basic picture settings
Get HDR10 working through the Vertex first. Then add LLDV.
- Input levelInput Signal → Input LevelAutoOptions: Auto / Standard (16-235) / Enhanced / Super White.
- EDIDInput Signal → HDMI2 EDIDAJVC: set to A under normal conditions; B is for older 1080p devices.HDMI 2 input only
- HDR gammaPicture Adjust → GammaDJVC: gamma suitable for viewing HDR content. It may switch automatically on HDR10; if not, select it.
- HDR colourPicture Adjust → Color ProfileBT.2020May be shown as 'Custom 1', depending on the image-quality data version.X7000 / X9000 (X5000 profile list not confirmed)
2. LLDV: set Gamma D and BT.2020 by hand
- Pick a User modePicture Adjust → Picture ModeUser 1-6 (User 1-3 on X5000)Keeps the LLDV settings apart from your SDR modes. THX and x.v.Color modes fix the gamma, so D cannot be chosen there.
- Force the HDR gammaPicture Adjust → GammaDLLDV has no HDR InfoFrame, so the automatic switch to D will not happen.
- Force wide colourPicture Adjust → Color ProfileBT.2020Needed for correct LLDV colours.X7000 / X9000
- Fine-tune brightnessPicture Adjust → Gamma → Picture Tone / Dark Level / Bright LevelPicture Tone -16 to +16; start at 0JVC: if the picture looks dark after selecting D, fine-tune here.
3. LLDV alternatives: Vertex HDR InfoFrame or JVC custom gamma
- Option B: let the Vertex trigger HDRPicture Adjust → GammaCheck that it reads D once LLDV playsWith the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame the JVC sees an HDR signal; JVC only says the gamma 'may' switch to D, so check it (Vertex steps: see the central Vertex page).
- Option C: JVC custom gammaPicture Adjust → Picture Mode → User mode, then Picture Adjust → GammaYour own custom gamma curve for LLDVHDfury says the original Vertex works for LLDV with a JVC custom gamma curve; the Vertex 'Disable HDR' then removes all HDR metadata so your curve is used.
Vertex settings for this setup
- LLDV: either force HDR on the display (see the steps above) or let the Vertex send an HDR10 InfoFrame with Enable Custom HDR (part B2). Use one of the two, and undo it for SDR.
- Connect the JVC to a Vertex output (often TOP when a Dolby Vision TV uses BOTTOM); give the player's Vertex input an LLDV EDID.
- HDR trigger is optional: a User mode with Gamma D and BT.2020 works without it.
- For the JVC custom-gamma route HDfury uses the Vertex 'Disable HDR' option, which cancels all HDR metadata.
- 'Enable Custom HDR' stays on after power cycles; switch it off for SDR sources.
Switch these off
- THX and x.v.Color picture modes (for LLDV)They fix the gamma, so Gamma D cannot be selected.
- Clear Motion Drive (C.M.D.)Personal choice; JVC notes it does not work for 24p video.
How you know it works
- In your LLDV User mode, Picture Adjust shows Gamma D and Color Profile BT.2020, and the picture has full colour instead of a grey, pale look.
Problems and fixes
LLDV looks washed out
Gamma is not D or Color Profile is not BT.2020. Set both by hand in a User mode.
Picture is too dark with Gamma D
JVC: fine-tune with Picture Tone, Dark Level and Bright Level.
4K60 HDR drops out
Use certified high-speed HDMI cables. LLDV at 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit fits within the Vertex's 18Gbps.
Someone says to pick Gamma HDR(ST.2084)
That value does not exist on this model. Use Gamma D.
- Whether the X5000 lists BT.2020 under Color Profile: check your own menu.
- How to create or load a custom gamma curve for LLDV: not covered by the JVC manual pages we checked.
- Owners report that LLDV arrives as YCbCr 4:2:2 12-bit; HDfury's manual does not state this.
