HDfury Vertex
VERTEX GLOSSARY / 4K SIGNAL FORMATS

Maximum 4K Formats

4K60 RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4 8-bit and 4K60 4:2:2 up to 12-bit.

SIMPLY PUT

A 4K signal is more than its resolution: frames per second, colour detail and bit depth decide how big it is.

The Vertex can carry the biggest 4K signals that fit in 18 Gbps, like 4K60 with full colour at 8-bit.

Bigger 4K signals, like 4K120 at 10-bit, need HDMI 2.1 and do not fit.

WITH THE HDFURY VERTEX

What is the highest 4K format the HDfury Vertex can pass?

HOW IT WORKS4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit or 8K30 4:2:0 8-bit, all within 600 MHz / 18 Gbps. 4K60 4:4:4 at 10-bit or 4K120 at 10-bit do not fit (p.110).

How to use it with the Vertex:

  1. Read the resolution, chroma, bit depth and MHz of the signal on the OLED Info page (p.19).
  2. Pick a matching EDID, e.g. table 11 (4K60-444 600MHz HDR) or 29 (4K60-420 12bit HDR) (p.15).
  3. Enable the TV's full-bandwidth HDMI mode on a 600 MHz-capable port (p.103).
  4. Use 600 MHz / 18 Gbps certified cables (p.104).

01 / SIMPLE EXPLANATION

What is it?

The highest important 4K signal examples.

4K resolution alone does not describe an HDMI signal. 60 Hz, chroma and bit depth decide how much bandwidth is needed.
02 / REAL-WORLD USE

Why would you use it?

4K60 4:4:4 8-bit or 4K60 4:2:2 up to 12-bit.

In a Vertex system, this works together with the source, the connected sink(s), EDID/HDCP behaviour and the selected routing or processing configuration.
03 / HOW VERTEX USES IT

Inside the HDMI chain

4K60 RGB/YCbCr 4:4:4 8-bit and 4K60 4:2:2 up to 12-bit.

SOURCE → VERTEX → DISPLAY / AVR / PROJECTOR
04 / IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Do not confuse this with…

A higher bit depth can require reduced chroma to remain inside bandwidth. The manual (Rev 1.30) lists the maximum formats as 4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit or 8K30 4:2:0 8-bit — all within the 600 MHz TMDS limit. HDMI 2.1 features such as FRL (up to 48 Gbps, needed for e.g. 4K120 10-bit HDR), VRR and ALLM are not supported.

This page explains the term in the context of the documented Vertex specification rather than as a general claim about every HDMI device.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK

Common questions

What is the highest 4K signal the Vertex can pass?

4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit or 8K30 4:2:0 8-bit (p.110).

Why does 4K60 HDR usually arrive as 4:2:2 12-bit?

HDR needs at least 10-bit, and 4K60 4:4:4 at 10-bit is over 18 Gbps. Using 4:2:2 (less colour detail) makes room for 12-bit, so players often pick that.

Can I use 4K120 with the Vertex?

Only as 4:2:0 8-bit. 4K120 at 10-bit (as used for HDR gaming) needs HDMI 2.1 FRL, which the Vertex does not have.
