JVC DLA-Z1 / RS4500 + Vertex
The Z1 switches to its HDR mode only when it detects an HDR signal. LLDV from the Vertex has no HDR flag, so this guide shows the manual settings and the Vertex alternatives.
JVC DLA-Z1 (EU/Asia) and DLA-RS4500 (US), native 4K laser projector (2016).
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP
No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex works with Gamma HDR(ST.2084) and BT.2020 chosen by hand, or with the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.
- Native Dolby Vision
- NOThe projector does not accept a Dolby Vision signal. It supports HDR10 and HLG.
- LLDV via the Vertex
- YESPicture Mode HDR is selected automatically only if an HDR signal is detected. Gamma HDR(ST.2084) can be chosen by hand in the HDR, Natural, Cinema and User 1-6 modes.
- HDR10
- YESNative 4K HDR10. JVC asks for a Premium High Speed HDMI cable (18Gbps) for 4K.
Before you start
- Use a Premium High Speed HDMI cable (18Gbps) between the Vertex and the Z1, as JVC asks for 4K.
- You need a player that outputs LLDV and an LLDV EDID on the Vertex. The Vertex passes up to 18Gbps (4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit). HDMI 2.1 modes (4K120 10-bit HDR, VRR, ALLM) do not pass.
1. Basic picture settings
Get HDR10 working through the Vertex first. Then add LLDV.
- Input levelInput Signal → Input LevelAutoOptions: Auto / 16-235 (Video) / 0-255 (PC) / 16-255 (S.White). A wrong level crushes or lifts blacks.
- EDIDInput Signal → HDMI 2 EDIDAJVC: set to A under normal conditions.HDMI 2 input only
- HDR10 reference modePicture Adjust → Picture ModeHDR (selected automatically on HDR10)Play an HDR10 disc first to prove the normal HDR path.
2. LLDV: select the HDR mode by hand
- Select the modePicture Adjust → Picture ModeHDR or User 1-6LLDV has no HDR flag, so the projector will not switch by itself.
- Fine-tune brightnessPicture Adjust → Gamma → Picture Tone (-16 to +16), Dark Level, Bright LevelStart at 0Tune only after input level and HDR mode are correct.
- Back to SDRPicture Adjust → Picture ModeYour normal SDR modeThe HDR or User mode keeps the PQ gamma; SDR in that mode looks wrong.
3. LLDV alternatives: Vertex HDR InfoFrame or JVC custom gamma
- Option B: let the Vertex trigger HDRPicture Adjust → Picture ModeCheck that HDR is selected once LLDV playsWith the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame the Z1 detects an HDR signal (Vertex steps: see the central Vertex page).
- Option C: JVC custom gammaPicture Adjust → Picture Mode → User 1-6, then Picture Adjust → GammaYour own custom gamma curve for LLDVHDfury says the original Vertex works for LLDV with a JVC custom gamma curve; the Vertex 'Disable HDR' then removes all HDR metadata so your curve is used.
Vertex settings for this setup
- LLDV: either force HDR on the display (see the steps above) or let the Vertex send an HDR10 InfoFrame with Enable Custom HDR (part B2). Use one of the two, and undo it for SDR.
- Connect the Z1 to a Vertex output (often TOP when a Dolby Vision TV uses BOTTOM); give the player's Vertex input an LLDV EDID.
- HDR trigger is optional: Picture Mode HDR or User 1-6 with Gamma HDR(ST.2084) works without it.
- For the JVC custom-gamma route HDfury uses the Vertex 'Disable HDR' option, which cancels all HDR metadata.
- 'Enable Custom HDR' stays on after power cycles; switch it off for SDR sources.
Switch these off
- Low LatencyOff for films. JVC: Clear Motion Drive cannot be set when Low Latency is On.
How you know it works
- Picture Adjust shows Gamma HDR(ST.2084) and Color Profile BT.2020 while LLDV plays, and the picture has full colour instead of a grey look.
Problems and fixes
LLDV looks washed out
Gamma is not HDR(ST.2084) or Color Profile is not BT.2020. Set both by hand, or turn on the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.
Blacks look crushed or grey
Check Input Signal → Input Level against the range your source sends.
NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER
- How to create or load a custom gamma curve for LLDV: not covered by the JVC manual pages we checked.
- Owners report that LLDV arrives as YCbCr 4:2:2 12-bit; HDfury's manual does not state this.
