JVC NZ7 / NZ8 / NZ9 / NP5 + Vertex
The NZ and NP projectors have no Dolby Vision, but they show Dolby Vision as LLDV from the Vertex once Content Type is set to HDR10. This guide gives the exact menu steps and what to switch off.
JVC DLA-NP5 / DLA-NZ7 / DLA-NZ8 / DLA-NZ9 and DLA-25LTD (2021 and later), US DLA-RS1100 / RS2100 / RS3100 / RS4100. Not covered: the older N/NX series (see the JVC NX guide).
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP
No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex works when you set Content Type to HDR10 by hand, or when the Vertex sends an HDR InfoFrame.
- Native Dolby Vision
- NOThe projector does not accept a Dolby Vision signal. It supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
- LLDV via the Vertex
- YESIn Content Type Auto, JVC treats a signal without ST2084 signalling as SDR, and LLDV has no HDR10 InfoFrame. Set Content Type to HDR10 by hand, or let the Vertex add an HDR InfoFrame.
- HDR10
- YESHDR10 picture modes: Frame Adapt HDR 1-3, HDR10, Pana_PQ, FILMMAKER MODE and User 4-6. Through the Vertex only up to 18Gbps (4K60).
Before you start
- The projector has HDMI 2.1 inputs, the Vertex does not. The Vertex passes up to 18Gbps (4K60 4:4:4 8-bit, 4K60 4:2:2 12-bit, 4K120 4:2:0 8-bit). HDMI 2.1 modes (4K120 10-bit HDR, VRR, ALLM) do not pass.
- Content Type options: Auto / SDR / HDR10+ / HDR10 / HLG. Auto maps ST2084 to HDR10 and other signals to SDR.
- You need a player that outputs LLDV and an LLDV EDID on the Vertex.
1. Basic picture settings
Get HDR10 working through the Vertex first. Then add LLDV.
- Input levelInput Signal → Input LevelAutoOptions: Auto / 16-235 (Video) / 0-255 (PC) / 16-255 (S.White).
- EDID modeInput Signal → HDMI EDID Setting → ModeB (4K60p)Mode A advertises 8K60p/4K120p, which the Vertex cannot pass. Options depend on firmware (current guide: A / B / C).
- HDR10 reference modePicture Adjust → Content Type = Auto, then Picture Adjust → Picture ModeFrame Adapt HDR 1 (or 2/3)Play an HDR10 disc first to prove the normal HDR path.
- Frame Adapt analysisPicture Adjust → HDR ProcessingFrame by Frame / Scene by Scene / StaticOnly shown in the Frame Adapt HDR modes.
- Theater OptimizerInstallation → Screen Setting (Screen Size (Diagonal), Screen Aspect, Screen Gain), then Picture Adjust → Theater OptimizerOn, then press SetWorks only with Frame Adapt HDR 1/2/3.
2. LLDV: set Content Type to HDR10 by hand
- Force HDRPicture Adjust → Content TypeHDR10In Auto, LLDV is treated as SDR. HDR10 makes the HDR picture modes available.
- Pick a static HDR modePicture Adjust → Picture ModeHDR10 or User 4-6The player has already tone-mapped LLDV, so start with a static mode (our recommendation).
- Tone mappingPicture Adjust → Tone MappingHDR(Auto) to start; Custom with correction HDR(PQ) for an exact PQ curveWithout mastering data JVC assumes MaxCLL 1000 nits / MaxFALL 400 nits.HDR10 and User 4-6 modes
- Fine-tune brightnessPicture Adjust → Tone Mapping → Picture Tone / Dark Level / Bright LevelStart at 0, small stepsAdjusts the overall HDR brightness.
- Back to Auto afterwardsPicture Adjust → Content TypeAutoOtherwise SDR sources are shown with a PQ curve and look far too dark.
3. LLDV alternative: the Vertex HDR InfoFrame
- Keep Content Type on AutoPicture Adjust → Content TypeAutoWith the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame the JVC reads the signal as HDR10 (Vertex steps: see the central Vertex page).
- Auto mode selectionInput Signal → Auto Pic.Mode SelectHDR10 → HDR10 or a User 4-6 modeAuto Pic.Mode Select only reacts to HDR10 signalling, so it does nothing for LLDV without the InfoFrame.
Vertex settings for this setup
- LLDV: either force HDR on the display (see the steps above) or let the Vertex send an HDR10 InfoFrame with Enable Custom HDR (part B2). Use one of the two, and undo it for SDR.
- Connect the JVC to a Vertex output (often TOP when a Dolby Vision TV uses BOTTOM); give the player's Vertex input an LLDV EDID.
- HDR trigger is optional: Content Type HDR10 works without it; with the Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' InfoFrame you can leave Content Type on Auto.
- 'Enable Custom HDR' stays on after power cycles; switch it off for SDR sources.
- HDfury also names a JVC custom-gamma route with the Vertex 'Disable HDR' option; on the NZ series Content Type HDR10 is the documented way to force HDR.
Switch these off
- Picture Adjust → Theater Optimizer and the Frame Adapt HDR modes (for LLDV)JVC documents both for HDR10 only; the player already tone-maps LLDV. Try HDR10 or a User mode first (our recommendation).
- Content Type HDR10 when you watch SDRSet it back to Auto, or SDR is shown with a PQ curve.
How you know it works
- With Content Type HDR10 the HDR picture modes (HDR10, User 4-6) can be selected and LLDV shows full colour, not a grey picture.
- SDR sources look normal again after Content Type is back on Auto.
Problems and fixes
LLDV looks flat and grey
Content Type is on Auto or SDR. Set Content Type = HDR10, or turn on the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.
SDR looks dark after an LLDV session
Set Picture Adjust → Content Type back to Auto.
4K120 works directly but not through the Vertex
Expected: the Vertex is limited to 18Gbps. Use EDID Mode B (4K60p) on the JVC input used by the Vertex.
NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER
- Whether Frame Adapt HDR or Theater Optimizer behave correctly on LLDV: JVC documents them for HDR10 only.
- 8K60 input on the NP5 / RS1100: not confirmed; the Vertex cannot pass 4K120 or 8K anyway.
- Which luminance values to enter in the Vertex HDR InfoFrame for LLDV: HDfury publishes no official value set for the original Vertex.
