BenQ W2700 / HT3550 + Vertex
The W2700 / HT3550 only enters HDR10 mode when it detects HDR10 in the signal. This guide shows the projector settings and why LLDV needs the Vertex HDR InfoFrame.
BenQ W2700 (Europe) and HT3550 (US), 2019, user manual V1.03. The later W2700i / HT3550i Android TV versions have their own manual and are not covered.
DOLBY VISION WITH THIS SETUP
No native Dolby Vision; LLDV from the Vertex only works when the Vertex adds an HDR10 InfoFrame, because this projector cannot be forced into HDR10 by hand.
- Native Dolby Vision
- NOHDR10 and HLG only; no Dolby Vision.
- LLDV via the Vertex
- YESOnly with the Vertex HDR InfoFrame. BenQ: the HDR10 picture mode is only available when Display → HDR is Auto and HDR10 content is detected. There is no manual HDR override.
- HDR10
- YESHDR10 and HLG on two HDMI 2.0b inputs, both with HDCP 2.2.
Before you start
- Set HDMI EDID to Enhanced first, otherwise the projector presents an HDMI 1.4 EDID.
- Make sure plain HDR10 already shows the HDR10 picture mode before you try LLDV.
1. Basic signal and picture settings
- HDMI 2.0 EDIDSystem Setup: Advanced → HDMI Settings → HDMI EDIDEnhancedBenQ: Enhanced switches to the HDMI 2.0 EDID, Standard to the HDMI 1.4 EDID.
- Signal formatSystem Setup: Advanced → HDMI Settings → HDMI FormatAuto (other options: RGB Limited, RGB Full, YUV Limited, YUV Full)Auto follows the incoming format.
- HDR detectionDisplay → HDRAutoBenQ: the HDR10 and HLG picture modes are only available when HDR is Auto and HDR content is detected.
2. Settings for LLDV from the Vertex
First enable the HDR InfoFrame on the Vertex; the steps below only work once the projector detects HDR10.
- Picture modePicture → Picture ModeHDR10This mode appears only after the projector detects the HDR10 InfoFrame from the Vertex; it is the mode that decodes PQ.
- HDR brightnessPicture → Advanced → HDR BrightnessStart at the default, then adjust to tasteBenQ: adjusts the brightness level of HDR images.
- Wide colourPicture → Advanced → Wide Color GamutOn for HDR (if offered)BenQ: adds DCI-P3 colour for 4K HDR films, at the cost of some brightness.
Vertex settings for this setup
- LLDV: this display only switches to HDR when it receives an HDR10 flag, which LLDV does not carry. Turn on the Vertex Enable Custom HDR (part B2, route 2) and switch it off again for SDR.
- Connect the projector to a Vertex output; if a Dolby Vision TV is also connected, the TV must use the BOTTOM output, so put the projector on TOP.
- The Vertex HDR InfoFrame is required: without it the projector stays in SDR and the HDR10 picture mode is not offered.
- The Vertex 'Enable Custom HDR' setting stays on until you switch it off, so SDR content is then also flagged as HDR (Vertex manual p.32, p.77).
- Keep the Vertex scaler in passthrough (No Scaling) for LLDV; the projector does the 4K processing.
Switch these off
- Picture → Advanced → CinemaMaster → Motion Enhancer 4KOptional: frame interpolation; turn it off if you want the film look. Not required for LLDV.
How you know it works
- INFORMATION menu: Picture Mode shows HDR10 while LLDV plays; it also lists Source, Resolution, Color System and Color Gamut (there is no separate dynamic range line).
Problems and fixes
LLDV plays, but HDR10 cannot be selected and the picture is washed out.
The projector did not detect HDR10. Enable the HDR InfoFrame on the Vertex and make sure Display → HDR is Auto.
No 4K HDR at all.
Set System Setup: Advanced → HDMI Settings → HDMI EDID = Enhanced and Display → HDR = Auto.
Black level looks wrong.
Set HDMI Format to Auto.
NOT CONFIRMED BY THE MANUFACTURER
- The full list of options under Display → HDR is not given in the V1.03 manual text; only Auto is confirmed.
- The manual lists System Setup: Advanced → HDMI Settings → HDMI Equalizer, but does not explain what its values change.
